Subscribe to SpectraLinks:

You may join the SPECTRALINKS forum, at anytime, by sending an e-mail message to the following e-mail address: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org

In the body of the message type:
SUBSCRIBE SPECTRALINKS "YOUR NAME"

(Your FULL name, without the quotation marks)

Your subscription will be activated in the REGULAR (standard default) subscription format and you will receive individual e-mail messages, "on-the-fly" as they are posted to the group.

If friends or colleagues are interested in subscribing to SpectraLinks, have them send an e-mail message as follows:

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

SUBSCRIBE SPECTRALINKS "Your Name"

.

Unsubscribe to SpectraLinks:

You may leave the SpectraLinks forum, at anytime, by sending an e-mail message to the following e-mail address:
LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org

In the body of the message type:
UNSUBSCRIBE SPECTRALINKS
or
SIGNOFF SPECTRALINKS

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

UNSUBSCRIBE SPECTRALINKS

You *must* UNSUBSCRIBE from the same e-mail address you subscribed with.

.
SpectraLinks postings are available in four (4) Subscription Formats: Regular, Digest, Index and Web:

1.  SpectraLinks Regular Format

Individual e-mail messages are sent to you, "On-The-Fly," as they are posted to the group.  This is the DEFAULT subscription setting.

2.  SpectraLinks Daily Digest Format

Daily postings are available in a DIGEST format [one e-mail message per day].  You will receive all the individual postings, for the day, in one (1) e-mail message.  You can then simply scan the table of contents and decide if there is anything there of interest to you.  If there is, you can check it out. If not . . . delete the digest.  You are informed and you have one less e-mail message.

If you wish to receive the digested version of the SpectraLinks daily postings, just issue the command syntax: SET SPECTRALINKS DIGEST. Note: You must FIRST be subscribed in the REGULAR subscription format [see subscription information, above], before you "SET SPECTRALINKS DIGEST".

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

SET SPECTRALINKS DIGEST

3.  SpectraLinks Daily Index Format

SpectraLinks is available in an INDEX format.

The daily INDEX provides a few lines of information for each posting; such as subject, date and time, and the number of lines (file size).  The actual message text is not included. You, then, may select just the message you are interested in, and order them from the List server.

If you wish to receive the indexed version of the SpectraLinks daily postings, just issue the command syntax: SET SPECTRALINKS INDEX. Note: You must FIRST be subscribed in the REGULAR subscription format [see subscription information, above], before you "SET SPECTRALINKS INDEX".

To order/retrieve the SpectraLink(s) you are interested in, simply reply to the message and include the original text, just as when you are replying to a normal message and want to quote your correspondent said.

Before sending the message, delete the lines corresponding to the items YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN, and make sure your reply is going to:

SPECTRALINKS-Search-request@Listserv.ICORS.Org

NOT to the list:  SPECTRALINKS@Listserv.ICORS.Org

You will receive the SpectraLinks you need.

To set your SpectraLinks subscription to INDEX, issue the following command:  SET SpectraLinks INDEX

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

SET SPECTRALINKS INDEX

4. SpectraLinks Web Archives Format

As a special service for our subscribers, ALL e-mail postings are accessible at the SpectraLinks Archives.

.
The SpectraLinks NOMAIL and MAIL subscription options:

If you would prefer to simply access the SpectraLinks Archives and NOT receive SpectraLinks postings, then SUBSCRIBE [as indicated, above] and SET your user subscription option to NOMAIL.

Use the NOMAIL command if you are going to be away for a few days and do not want to come back to 500 pieces of SpectraLinks e-mail.  This is a great command if you only want to access the SpectraLinks archives and do not want to receive SpectraLinks postings.  Simply set your subscription to NOMAIL and follow the standard procedure for accessing the SpectraLinks Archives.

NOMAIL

The "NoMail" option will TEMPORARILY STOP your SpectraLinks postings from being delivered to your e-mail address until YOU start them again.  You may postpone your mail as often as you like.  The NOMAIL command syntax is:

SET SPECTRALINKS NOMAIL

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

SET SPECTRALINKS NOMAIL

MAIL

When you are ready to start receiving SpectraLinks mail again, issue the following command:

SET SPECTRALINKS MAIL or
SET SPECTRALINKS
DIGEST or
SET SPECTRALINKS
INDEX

This command will start your mail again, in the MAIL, DIGEST or INDEX subscription format.

Example:

TO: LISTSERV@Listserv.ICORS.Org
SUBJECT: [leave blank]

-------------  Message Text --------------

SET SPECTRALINKS MAIL

.
Do's and Don'ts of SpectraLinks Participation:
  1. NEVER send files or attachments to a discussion list, especially SpectraLinks.  Files and attachments should only be sent to people you have made prior arrangements with to send and/or receive files/attachments.  Even then, you should only save those files/attachments to a floppy disk or a zip disk designated explicitly for downloads and files/attachments.

  2. Avoid the viruses and worms by not sending files, attachments and HTML to our forum.  Even your best on-line friends can infect your system.  Use antiviral scanning software on the floppy disk or zip disk BEFORE opening the file.  Only send e-mail in standard ASCII and not use HTML code embedding.

  3. If you want your posting read by the broadest number of people, please refrain from sending ANY e-mail to the SpectraLinks forum using HTML code embedding.   The MAJORITY of people using e-mail simply can not read HTML code embedding.

When one configures their browser (or e-mail client) to send HTML code, the message is no longer conforming to the standard/international e-mail protocols.   This immediately reduces the number of places that will accept your message (e.g. gateways, Newsgroups and BBS) and people who will read and reply to their message.  Most people (especially me) will usually delete it before attempting to wade through the visible codes.

E-mail is a TEXT based medium/format.  HTML formatted messages take up unnecessary archive disk space and in most all cases can not be read by FTP, Gopher and Lynx readers.

  4. We are communicating on an international basis, please set your browser to plain ASCII.  This can be found under the options menu in both Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

  5. If your mail program supports fancy formatting (bold, italic and so on) in the mail messages it generates, DO NOT use those feature on the SpectraLinks forum.  In general, any time you send a fancy formatted message, make sure that the recipient(s) has a mail program that can display such messages.  At this time, most Internet mail programs, especially the international programs, do not support anything other than PLAIN TEXT in messages, although this will change over time (three (3) years).
