A Short History and
Purpose
When Paula Roper created AFAM-L in 1991
there were few, if any, African American discussion lists on the Internet that served as a
forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and concerns of African American Studies and
of African Americans life and culture. Since that time there has been a small explosion in
the variety of discussion lists available to African American's, but the quality of
information exchanged is somewhat questionable.
Our core operating philosophy
centers on a forum to research major ideas, concepts, problems, issues and finding answers
to information related to people of colour specially Black people, worldwide.
Open discussion and critical examinations
of significant events, issues and questions accomplish this. Members of AFAM-L are
encouraged to comment on the issues that affect our lives, and explore, expose, and
analyze the most critical issues that effect our lives.
In addition to serving as a
research forum for locating and verifying information, this discussion group also serves
as a vehicle for networking, conference listings and employment opportunities, and the
sharing of research or literary interests.
Because the AFAM-L is intended to
facilitate networking and sharing ideas outside of cyberspace, an individual who post
messages to the list should sign the message with their real names.
AFAM-L is only as stimulating and
intellectually appealing as the ideas, questions and comments you bring forward. It is up
to you to keep a powerful tool to share information and ideas critical and intellectually
engaging.
We look forward to your subscription and
participation.
